As soon as NBC projected he would win the election, I got a lump in my throat and started crying. I was very emotional for the next hour or two as his victory became more solidified.
The promise of political change and Obama’s leadership aside, his win touched me very deeply because it was such a great milestone as far as racial equality and acceptance in the U.S. The victory also resonated inside me because Obama is a minority, just like me.
It gave me so much hope that things could in fact get better as far as tolerance and treatment of transgender people, as well as those with “alternative” sexual orientations, including gays, lesbians and bisexuals. It gave me hope that there might one day be a shift in attitude so that social rejection, hatred, violence, discrimination and prejudice become less common in the everyday lives of LGBT Americans.
I’m just so happy I was alive to witness this, and I’m really looking forward to inauguration day!
